What Are Grade Thresholds?
Grade thresholds (also known as grade boundaries) are the minimum marks required to achieve each grade in a Cambridge examination. After every exam session, Cambridge International publishes official grade threshold tables showing exactly how many raw marks you needed for each grade.
Key fact: Grade boundaries change every year. They depend on the difficulty of the papers and how the entire cohort of students performed. A mark that gave you an A* in one session might give you an A in another – and that's completely normal.
For Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620), the syllabus is designed to give learners a thorough introduction to the study of chemistry and to develop an understanding of scientific concepts and principles.[1]
Understanding the A*–G Grading System
The 0620 Chemistry syllabus uses the traditional A*–G grading scale. Here's how the grades are defined:
| Grade | Performance Level | Approximate Percentage Range |
|---|---|---|
| A* | Exceptional performance | ~90% and above |
| A | Excellent | ~80–89% |
| B | Very Good | ~70–79% |
| C | Good | ~60–69% |
| D | Satisfactory | ~50–59% |
| E | Adequate | ~40–49% |
| F | Weak | ~30–39% |
| G | Very Weak | ~20–29% |
Key points about A*–G grading:
- Grades A* to C are considered "good passes" and are well‑regarded by universities and employers worldwide
- Grade A* is the highest possible achievement, awarded to the top performers
- This syllabus is available in the March (for India only), June, and November examination series[2]
- The syllabus is available at both Core and Extended tiers. Core candidates can achieve grades C–G, while Extended candidates can achieve grades A*–G[3]
