This CAIE O Level Physics 5054 & igcse 0625 Lesson/Unit Plan Centre of gravity Thematic Lesson Plans bundle is your ultimate companion for teaching Centre of Gravity at the Cambridge O Level and IGCSE level. The centre of gravity is a fundamental concept that links forces, moments and stability – it explains why objects topple, why racing cars are low and wide, and how structures stay upright. The Cambridge O Level Physics (5054) and IGCSE Physics (0625) syllabuses develop learners’ competency, confidence, and fluency in their use of techniques with and without the use of a calculator, cultivating scientific understanding. For CAIE 5054, centre of gravity is covered under Topic 1.9 Turning effect and centre of gravity[reference:0]. For IGCSE 0625, centre of gravity is covered under syllabus point 1.5.3[reference:1]. Whether you are a new teacher looking for structured lesson plans or an experienced educator seeking fresh, engaging content, this resource is designed to save you hours of planning while delivering outstanding results. Unlock the secrets of the universe and empower your students with a deep understanding of the laws of nature!
What This Resource Covers
This comprehensive thematic lesson and unit plan bundle covers the Centre of Gravity topic as per the CAIE O Level Physics 5054 and Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 syllabuses. Each lesson is carefully aligned with the latest Cambridge curriculum requirements and includes engaging activities, practical experiments, assessment opportunities, and differentiation strategies. The centre of gravity topic is part of the Forces and Moments section, which is crucial for understanding equilibrium, stability, and turning effects.
Complete Centre of Gravity Topic Coverage
- Definition of Centre of Gravity (Core) – The centre of gravity of an object is defined as the point through which the entire weight of the object may be considered to act[reference:2]. For a symmetrical object of uniform density, the centre of gravity is located at the point of symmetry – for example, the centre of gravity of a sphere is at its centre[reference:3]. Since the centre of gravity is a hypothetical point, it can lie inside or outside of a body[reference:4].
- Centre of Gravity of Regular and Irregular Shapes – For symmetrical objects with uniform density, the centre of gravity is located at the point of symmetry[reference:5]. For a uniform object, such as a ruler, the centre of gravity is at its geometric centre[reference:6]. For irregularly shaped objects, experimental methods must be used to find the centre of gravity[reference:7].
- Experimental Determination – The Plumb Line Method (Core & Supplement) – For irregularly shaped objects, the centre of gravity can be found using the suspension method[reference:8]. This involves punching 3 holes near the outer edges of the plane lamina in different locations, creating a loop of thread and hanging the plane lamina from a clamp stand[reference:9]. A plumb line (a weighted thread) is used to show the line of action of the weight force[reference:10]. A ruler and pencil are used to mark the line of action of the weight force onto the plane lamina[reference:11]. The process is repeated until 3 lines have been drawn – the point at which the lines cross is the position of the centre of gravity[reference:12]. This is a Core skill for IGCSE 0625[reference:13] and is also assessed in CAIE 5054.
- Centre of Gravity and Stability (Core) – The position of the centre of gravity of an object affects its stability[reference:14]. An object is stable when its centre of gravity lies above its base[reference:15]. The wider base an object has, the lower its centre of gravity and it is more stable[reference:16]. The narrower base an object has, the higher its centre of gravity and the object is more likely to topple over if pushed[reference:17]. The most stable objects have wide bases and low centres of gravity[reference:18]. This is a Core skill for IGCSE 0625[reference:19].
- Centre of Gravity and Toppling (Supplement – IGCSE 0625 Extended) – An object will topple when its centre of gravity is no longer over its base[reference:20]. If the line of action of the weight force lies outside the base of the object, there will be a resultant moment, and the body will topple[reference:21]. The stability of objects can be increased by widening the base[reference:22]. Tall objects with a narrow base will topple easily[reference:23]. Lorries and buses are advised not to use motorways and bridges on very windy days because of their higher centre of gravity[reference:24].
- Practical Applications of Centre of Gravity – Cars are stable because they have a low centre of gravity and a wide base[reference:25]. High chairs are designed with a wide base so that they do not topple[reference:26]. Bunsen burners have a wide base to ensure they do not topple[reference:27]. Racing cars are designed with very low centres of gravity to prevent toppling during high-speed cornering.
- Centre of Gravity vs Centre of Mass – The centre of gravity is the point where the object’s weight acts[reference:28]. Near Earth’s surface, the centre of gravity and centre of mass are at the same point[reference:29].
