📐 What are periodic table trends?
Periodic trends are patterns in element properties (atomic radius, ionization energy, electronegativity, etc.) as you move across a period or down a group. These trends arise from changes in nuclear charge, shielding, and electron configuration. Essential for O Level, IGCSE, A Level, IB, Edexcel, AQA exams — questions appear in multiple choice, theory, and practical papers.
Effective nuclear charge (Zeff) is the key driver: Zeff increases left→right, decreases slightly down a group (due to shielding).
🔬 The big 4 trends (with exam definitions)
📏 Atomic radius
Trend: Decreases → across period (more protons pull electrons in). Increases ↓ down group (extra shells).
MCQ tip: Na > Mg > Al > Si ...
⚡ Ionization energy
Trend: Increases → across period (higher Zeff). Decreases ↓ down group (outer electron farther).
Exceptions: Be > B, N > O (due to sub‑shell stability).
❤️ Electronegativity
Trend: Increases → across period (higher Zeff). Decreases ↓ down group (bigger atom, less pull).
Fluorine is the most electronegative (4.0).
🔋 Electron affinity
Trend: generally becomes more negative → across period (except noble gases). Down group becomes less negative (extra shell).
