What Are Grade Thresholds?
Grade thresholds (also known as grade boundaries) are the minimum marks required to achieve each grade in a Cambridge examination. After every exam session, Cambridge International publishes official grade threshold tables showing exactly how many raw marks you needed for an A*, A, B, C, and so on.
Key fact: Grade boundaries change every year. They depend on the difficulty of the papers and how the entire cohort of students performed. A mark that gave you an A* in one session might give you an A in another – and that’s completely normal.
For English as a Second Language (0510), the speaking component is separately endorsed – meaning your speaking performance gets a separate grade (1–5) alongside your main A*–G grade.
📊 0510 Grade Thresholds – March 2026
Here are the official component grade thresholds for Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (Speaking Endorsement) (0510) from the March 2026 exam series:
Component Grade Thresholds
| Component | Maximum Raw Mark | A | B | C | D | E | F | G |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Component 12 | 60 | 52 | 48 | 44 | 40 | 36 | 32 | 28 |
| Component 22 | 40 | 36 | 33 | 30 | 26 | 22 | 19 | 16 |

Speaking Endorsement (Component 32)

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Component 32 | 40 | 35 | 27 | 19 | 11 | 5 |

Note: Grade A* does not exist at the level of an individual component. Component marks are combined to determine your final syllabus grade.

How to Interpret Your 0510 Results
Understanding the Speaking Endorsement
The key difference between 0510 and 0511 is how speaking is handled:
0510 (Speaking Endorsement): Your speaking performance is marked separately and appears on your certificate as a numerical grade from 1 (high) to 5 (low) – it does not affect your main A*–G grade.
0511 (Count-in Speaking): Your speaking marks do contribute to your overall grade.
For 0510, you can achieve an excellent overall grade even if speaking isn’t your strongest area – as long as you perform well on the written papers!
What Universities Look For
Many UK universities accept Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) as proof of English proficiency. When applying through UCAS, your 0510 grade must be entered under the International GCSE section.
💪 What If You Didn’t Get the Grade You Wanted?
If your results weren’t what you hoped for, take a deep breath. This is not a reflection of your potential – it’s simply a signal that a different approach might be needed.
